About this worksheet

Six blank shapes come with two instructions each: make this many equal parts, then color this fraction. A circle becomes halves, a square becomes fourths with three parts colored, a rectangle becomes thirds. Nothing is pre-divided, so the child has to decide where the lines go before any coloring happens.

Drawing the partition is a good deal harder than reading one, and it is where you find out whether a child really understands equal parts or has been matching pictures. Cutting a circle into three is the honest challenge on this page. A slightly wobbly line is fine as long as the pieces are close to the same size, and saying so out loud keeps the focus on the idea rather than on neat handwriting.

What students will practice

  • Draw lines to make equal parts
  • Partition circles, squares and rectangles
  • Color a fraction after making it
