About this worksheet

Six numbered rows each hold two shapes with some parts colored, and the child circles whichever one shows more. The pairs are chosen so counting pieces alone will not carry a child through: one row sets a shape with three of four parts colored against one with two of three, and another puts a single wide half beside three narrow fourths.

Nothing on this page is written as a symbol, which is what keeps it in reach at second grade while still building the judgment that comparing fractions later depends on. Watching which pair makes your child pause tells you more than the final score does.

What students will practice

  • Compare two shaded amounts by eye
  • See that more pieces is not always more
  • Build a feel for size before symbols
