About this worksheet

Under “Count the Sides!” and a name line, six large shapes each sit above three numbered boxes, one of which gets colored in: a pentagon, an oval, a right triangle, a diamond, a trapezoid and a hexagon. Thin rules divide the page into three bands of two.

Choosing from three numbers instead of writing one makes this the gentler side-counting sheet, and a good first step for a child who can count but is not yet writing numerals confidently. Two shapes here are worth talking through. The oval offers 2, 1 and 0, and the answer is zero because a curve is not a straight side, which surprises most children the first time. The right triangle is tipped so that no side lies flat along the bottom, and it is still a triangle with three sides, which is exactly the kind of thing this page is for.

What students will practice

  • Count the sides of a shape and pick the number
  • Choose one answer from three
  • Work out how many sides a curved shape has
