About this worksheet

“Shape Side Count” heads the page with a name line and a few star and heart doodles in the corner. Six rows follow, each with a shape on the left and three large numbered boxes to the right, and the instruction is to put an X on the right number. The shapes are an upside-down triangle, a circle, a tall rectangle, a hexagon, a parallelogram and a pentagon.

Marking an X is the quickest way a child can answer, which makes this the fastest sheet here and a good ten-minute warm-up or exit check. The shapes are the interesting part: only two of the six sit in the position a child usually sees them. The triangle is inverted, the rectangle stands on its short end and the parallelogram leans. A child who counts all six correctly is genuinely recognizing shapes rather than recognizing pictures, and the circle at zero straight sides is worth a short conversation on its own.

What students will practice

  • Count sides on a tilted or upside-down shape
  • Mark an answer with an X
  • Recognize a shape that is not sitting flat
