About this worksheet

Six cartoon shapes with arms and sneakers fill two rows under “Name That Shape!”: pentagon, star, crescent, octagon, heart and diamond, each above an empty box. The six word cards to cut from the bottom strip are heart, octagon, star, crescent, diamond and pentagon.

This is the harder of the two cut and paste sheets, and the vocabulary is why. Octagon, pentagon and crescent are longer words for shapes a child may not yet be able to name out loud, so it works best after the side-counting pages rather than before them. That order gives the child a way to work it out instead of guessing: count the sides of the octagon, get eight, then find the longest word on the strip. Pair it with the shape word match sheet for a set of twelve shape names.

What students will practice

  • Learn the harder shape names: octagon, pentagon, crescent
  • Match a longer written word to a shape
  • Cut on a dashed line and paste in place
