About this worksheet

Six cartoon shapes with arms, legs and sneakers stand in two rows of three: heart, square, star, diamond, circle and triangle, each with an empty box underneath. A strip of six dashed word cards runs along the bottom of the page, reading circle, star, diamond, triangle, heart and square, with the instruction “Cut out the words. Glue each one below the matching shape.”

This is where shape work turns into reading. The child has to get from a picture to a printed word, so it asks more than any of the tracing or matching pages here. Cut all six cards first and lay them out face up before any glue comes out, since that turns it into a puzzle that can be rearranged instead of a decision that is permanent. Of the two cut and paste sheets in this set, start with this one: the six words are shorter and far more familiar.

What students will practice

  • Read the written name of a shape
  • Match a shape word to the shape itself
  • Cut on a dashed line and glue in place
