About this worksheet

Under the instruction “Write how many sides each shape has,” eight large outlined shapes are laid out in two columns, each with a blank line beside it: triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon, rectangle, an upside-down triangle, a second pentagon and a second hexagon. A double rounded border frames the page and nothing else competes for attention.

This is the only side-counting sheet in the set that asks a child to write the numeral rather than pick it from choices, so it is the harder version and the one to save until counting is reliable. Show them to touch each side with a fingertip as they count, which stops the double-counting that makes hexagons come out as seven. The repeated pentagon and hexagon at the bottom are deliberate: those two are the pair children mix up most.

What students will practice

  • Count the sides of a flat shape
  • Write a numeral on a line
  • Tell a pentagon from a hexagon by counting
