About this worksheet

Twelve prompts in the form “The opposite of happy is ___”, working through happy, clean, bright, new, full, loud, wet, strong, tall, hot, hard and fast. The word bank above them holds fourteen adjectives, and a child writes the matching opposite on each line.

The two extra words in the bank are the point of the page. With twelve blanks and fourteen choices, a child cannot coast to the end by elimination and then fill the last line with whatever is left. Heavy and rough are both plausible-looking leftovers, so every line has to be answered on meaning. It is a small design decision that changes how much thinking the last three questions ask for.

What students will practice

  • Match an adjective to its opposite
  • Choose from a word bank with words left over
  • Write the answer rather than circle it
