About this worksheet

Eight short sentences waiting on a describing word: the giraffe, my kitten, the soup, the drum, the ant, the ice cube, the puddle and the race car. Ten words sit in the bank above, so two are left unused.

Worth knowing before you hand it over: this page has more than one defensible answer in several places. The puddle can be wet or cold, the kitten can be soft or happy, and the soup can be hot or sticky. That is not sloppiness, it is the most useful conversation on the sheet. Asking a child why they chose soft over happy for the kitten gets at what an adjective actually does, which is more than a single-answer page can do.

What students will practice

  • Pick a describing word that fits the noun
  • Use a word bank without repeating a word
  • Defend an answer when two words could work
