About this worksheet

Twelve describing words go into three boxes headed Size, Feeling and Texture: big, happy, soft, tiny, bumpy, sad, tall, smooth, angry, short, sticky and sleepy. Four words belong in each box.

The interesting confusion here is between Feeling and Texture, because in English “feel” does both jobs. Soft is how something feels to a hand, sad is how a person feels inside, and a first grader who has just learned that adjectives describe will reasonably try to put both in the same column. The ruler, smiley face and feather icons on the three headers exist to settle that, and they are worth pointing at before a child starts rather than after.

What students will practice

  • Group adjectives by what kind of thing they describe
  • Tell a texture word from a feeling word
  • Write twelve words into three labeled columns
