About this worksheet

Eight sentences about the seal, the beach, the whale, the sea turtle, the clownfish, a shark’s tooth, the ocean and the seahorse, with a jellyfish, a clownfish, a sea turtle and seaweed drawn around the page. Ten adjectives sit in the bank and a child writes one into each blank.

Two of the sentences carry their own clue: the whale is the biggest animal, so it is huge, and the sea turtle swims slowly, so it is slow. Those two are scaffolding, placed third and fourth so a child who is stalling on the opening lines gets a worked example partway down rather than a wall of identical prompts. The other six give nothing away.

What students will practice

  • Choose an adjective that fits a sea animal
  • Use a clue inside the sentence to pick the word
  • Read a ten-word bank and leave two unused
