About this worksheet

Ten sentences with a blank and two words to choose between, one an adjective and one not: sleepy or jumped for the owl, table or cold for the wind, sweet or ran for the plum, tall or bicycle for the tree, and on through muddy boots, a bright lamp, a soft pillow, a windy day, a striped scarf and a warm cup of milk.

The wrong answers alternate between verbs and nouns rather than being all one kind, so a child cannot settle into a single trick like “the answer is never an action word.” Reading the whole sentence back with the chosen word in place is the check that works here, and it is worth teaching on this page because it is the habit that carries into every grammar sheet after it.

What students will practice

  • Choose the adjective over a verb or a noun
  • Test a word by reading the sentence back
  • Work through ten items with two choices each
