About this worksheet

Ten sentences each have one blank in front of a noun, and a box of ten adjectives sits at the top: heavy, sour, brave, shiny, soft, noisy, cold, hungry, sticky and bumpy. The answer is never given away by the noun alone. A lemon could be many things, but a lemon that made my mouth pucker can only be sour, so the child has to read the whole sentence and let the rest of it point to the right word.

That is the skill hiding inside this sheet. Second graders are starting to work out word meanings from the words around them, and an adjective blank is one of the friendliest places to practice it. Every word in the box is used exactly once, which means the last blank works as a quiet check: if the leftover word does not fit, an earlier answer needs another look.

It prints in black and white with a few small line drawings, so it is light on ink for a class set.

What students will practice

  • Use clue words in a sentence to choose a describing word
  • Match an adjective to the noun it describes
  • Read a sentence again to check that it makes sense
