About this worksheet
Ten ocean animals to find in the grid, and every one of them has its picture drawn around the edge of the page with the word underneath. Otter, turtle, oyster, dolphin, clam, lobster, walrus, narwhal, manatee, stingray.
Having the pictures there changes what the puzzle does. A child hunting for NARWHAL is looking at a narwhal while they do it, so the word and the animal end up attached to each other instead of the word being an abstract string of letters to match.
The words run across and down rather than diagonally or backwards, which keeps it fair for a second grader who is still learning how to scan a grid systematically. MANATEE and STINGRAY are the long ones and usually get found last.
Plain black on white, and it downloads as a true vector PDF at around 100 KB, so a class set costs almost nothing in ink.
