About this worksheet
A girl keeps a diary on the Oregon Trail in 1848, starting in Independence, Missouri, with sore feet because the wagon is too full to ride in. She crosses the swift Platte River holding her little brother’s hand, sees Chimney Rock rise out of the prairie like a giant stone pencil, and paints her name on Independence Rock.
Because it is a diary, the questions lean on point of view: question three asks for two words that show it is written in first person, and question four tracks how her feelings move from homesick to brave. The last question uses the entry dates to work out how long the family had been traveling, a small bit of math that fits a westward expansion unit.
