About this worksheet

Eight full-color animals in a red gingham frame, each missing its vowels: calf, goose, pony, turkey, hen, donkey, lamb and bull. The instruction is to say the animal’s name out loud first, then write in the letters that are missing.

Saying it aloud is the whole method here. A child who sounds out “goose” hears the long vowel before they have to choose which letters make it, and that ordering is what turns a puzzle into phonics practice. Filed at first grade for the words rather than the layout: goose needs the oo team, donkey and turkey end in the ey spelling, and pony runs on an open syllable, all of which sit past kindergarten short-vowel work.

What students will practice

  • Say a word aloud, then hear its vowel sounds
  • Fill single vowels and vowel teams
  • Read two-syllable animal names
