About this worksheet

Eight soft-color animals inside a wooden fence border: hen, lamb, goose, donkey, turkey, calf, pony and bull, each with the vowels lifted out of its name. The child looks at the picture and writes the missing letters.

The word set climbs as you go down the page. Hen and lamb are one short vowel apiece and most first graders fill those without pausing, while goose, donkey and turkey each need a two-letter answer and a bit of thinking about which team makes the sound. That spread is what makes it a good independent sheet: nobody stalls on the first box, and nobody finishes the last one on autopilot.

What students will practice

  • Write missing vowels from a picture cue
  • Work through short vowels and vowel teams in one pass
  • Read hen, lamb, goose, donkey, turkey, calf, pony, bull
