About this worksheet

Ten farm sentences under a red rule, with a fence, a hen, a sheep and a pig along the bottom. The rooster wakes the sleepy farm, horses gallop through the tall grass, the old tractor rumbles down the dirt road, lambs jump the little stream, the barn cat naps in the fresh hay, and four more.

The reason this sits at second grade and the space version sits at first is the padding. Almost every sentence here carries one or two adjectives before the noun, so a child hunting for the action has to read past sleepy, hungry, tall, old and fresh to find it. Gallop, rumble and nap are also less obvious as verbs than run or jump.

What students will practice

  • Find the verb inside a longer sentence
  • Read past adjectives to reach the action
  • Underline one action word per line
