19Free Verbs Worksheets, Kindergarten to Grade 2

Nineteen free verbs worksheets in the order I would actually hand them out. Verbs get taught as a definition, a word that shows action, and then children meet a sentence where the oven hums and the definition quietly stops helping. So this set works the other way around: it starts with pictures where the action is visible, moves to finding verbs hiding inside real sentences, and only then gets to tenses and agreement. Skip to whichever group matches what your child can already do.

Verbs are the first piece of grammar that has to be taught rather than absorbed. Children arrive at school already using them correctly in speech, which is exactly what makes the formal version slippery: they can say the rooster crows without being able to point at the word doing the work.

That is why this set spends its first six pages on pictures. A word bank under a photograph of a girl on roller skates is not really a grammar exercise, it is a way of establishing that some words name things and other words name what is happening, using examples where the difference is impossible to miss. The grammar starts at number eight, when the pictures go away and fifteen apples hold a mix of verbs, nouns and adjectives.

If you are printing for a classroom rather than one child, the natural breaks are after 06, after 12 and after 17. Those are the three points where the task changes rather than just getting harder.

Everyday Verbs Chart: 28 Action Words with Pictures

Reference · 10 minutes · Kindergarten
Everyday Verbs Chart: 28 Action Words with Pictures worksheet preview

Twenty eight color pictures with the verb printed under each, seven rows of four. Skip, crawl, hop, ride, draw, cut, glue, count, all the way through ask, answer, help and study.

Why it starts here There is nothing to fill in. Tape it above the writing table and it answers the question that stops young children mid-sentence, which is how to spell the word they already know how to say. It also works as a word bank for anything further down this list.
02

Action Verbs Worksheet: Write the Verb You See

Naming actions · 15 minutes · Kindergarten
Action Verbs Worksheet: Write the Verb You See worksheet preview

Twelve color scenes with a write-on box under each, and a word bank holding cook, fly, brush, dance, kick, wave, build, skate, draw, sweep, ride and hug.

Why it works Every word in the bank is used exactly once, so a child who has placed eleven can reason out the twelfth. The pictures carry the reading, which means this is vocabulary and letter matching rather than spelling from memory.
03

Outdoor Action Verbs Worksheet: 12 Things Kids Do

Naming actions · 15 minutes · Kindergarten
Outdoor Action Verbs Worksheet: 12 Things Kids Do worksheet preview

The same format in warm retro colors, moved outside. Swinging, sliding, digging in a sandbox, splashing, blowing bubbles, fishing, rowing, hopscotch, raking, picking flowers and rolling down a hill.

Best for The easiest of the picture sets to start with. Splash and dig and swing come out of a kindergartner's mouth without prompting, so the only new work is connecting a spoken word to its written shape.
04

School Verbs Worksheet: Action Words for the Classroom

Naming actions · 15 minutes · Kindergarten
School Verbs Worksheet: Action Words for the Classroom worksheet preview

Twelve classroom scenes: cutting, gluing, coloring, counting blocks, pointing at a map, sharing, sitting to read, standing by the door, helping, tying a shoe and opening a backpack.

Print this one in September The twelve verbs on the page are the same twelve a teacher says out loud before nine in the morning, so it doubles as a first-week routine sheet. Read the word, do the action, then write it down.
05

Daily Routine Verbs Worksheet: My Day in Action Words

Naming actions · 15 minutes · Kindergarten
Daily Routine Verbs Worksheet: My Day in Action Words worksheet preview

A footprint path through twelve numbered pictures, from stretching awake under a sun to sleeping under a moon. Comb, zip, walk, write, paint, water, throw, bake, fold and feed in between.

Why the order matters Because the pictures run in sequence, this works as a talking activity before it works as a writing one. Ask what happens first and what happens next, and the verbs arrive in conversation before a pencil touches the page.
06

Action Verbs Worksheet to Color: Verbs Everywhere

Naming actions · 20 minutes · Kindergarten
Action Verbs Worksheet to Color: Verbs Everywhere worksheet preview

The black and white version. Twelve line-art scenes to label and then color: climbing, eating, sweeping, riding, reading, jumping rope, hugging, singing, kicking, clapping, drawing and washing hands.

When to reach for it When you want the activity to outlast the writing. A child who finishes twelve words in five minutes still has twelve pictures to color, and the coloring keeps them looking at the action long enough for the word to stick.
07

Farm Action Verbs Worksheet: Verbs Down on the Farm

Harder vocabulary · 20 minutes · Grade 1
Farm Action Verbs Worksheet: Verbs Down on the Farm worksheet preview

Twelve farm jobs in circular line art: milking, pushing a wheelbarrow, chasing a chicken, hanging laundry, planting, gathering eggs, hammering, pulling a wagon, scooping feed, stacking hay, petting a lamb and pouring water.

Why it is first grade The format is identical to the kindergarten pages. The vocabulary is not. Hammer, scoop, gather and stack are a step past ride and jump, and several are words a child knows as a thing before they know them as an action.
08

Identify Verbs Worksheet: Color Every Action Word

Sorting · 15 minutes · Grade 1
Identify Verbs Worksheet: Color Every Action Word worksheet preview

Fifteen apples, each holding one word, and only the action words get colored. Eight are verbs. Seven are not.

Watch for Five distractors are nouns, but two are adjectives, and happy and blue are exactly where children slip, because a word that describes feels like a word that does. Getting those two wrong is the useful mistake here. Stop on them.
09

Space Verbs Worksheet: Underline the Action Word

Verbs in sentences · 15 minutes · Grade 1
Space Verbs Worksheet: Underline the Action Word worksheet preview

Ten short space sentences with one action word hiding in each, and a dashed rocket trail down the margin. The rocket blasts, stars twinkle, a robot beeps, the moon glows.

Why it is the first sentence page The sentences are deliberately short, most of them six or seven words. The skill being practiced is finding the verb, not decoding the sentence, so nothing else on the page competes for attention.
10

Farmyard Verbs Worksheet: Underline the Verb

Verbs in sentences · 15 minutes · Grade 2
Farmyard Verbs Worksheet: Underline the Verb worksheet preview

Ten farm sentences with a hen, a sheep and a pig along the bottom. Horses gallop through the tall grass, the old tractor rumbles down the dirt road, the barn cat naps in the fresh hay.

What makes it harder The padding. Almost every sentence carries an adjective or two before the noun, so a child hunting for the action has to read past sleepy, hungry, tall, old and fresh to reach it.
11

The Verb Bakery: Underline the Action Verb Worksheet

Verbs in sentences · 15 minutes · Grade 2
The Verb Bakery: Underline the Action Verb Worksheet worksheet preview

Ten bakery sentences under a rolling pin. The baker stirs the thick batter, my sister cracks two brown eggs, the warm ovens hum all morning, the soft dough rises in the bowl.

The two that catch people Ovens that hum and dough that rises are actions with nobody doing them, and children who learned that a verb is something you do skip straight past both. That is why they are on the page instead of ten more sentences about stirring.
12

Action Words Worksheet: Circle Verbs, Then Write Them

Verbs in sentences · 20 minutes · Grade 2
Action Words Worksheet: Circle Verbs, Then Write Them worksheet preview

Two jobs on one page. Circle the ten verbs in a box of fifteen words, then use each one to finish a sentence below, from stirring soup with a wooden spoon to catching the ball at the game.

Why it is the strongest page here The two halves check each other. Every circled verb is used exactly once below, so a child who circled a noun by mistake runs out of words before they run out of sentences and finds the error themselves.
13

Am, Is, or Are? Be Verbs Fill-in-the-Blank Worksheet

Be verbs · 15 minutes · Grade 1
Am, Is, or Are? Be Verbs Fill-in-the-Blank Worksheet worksheet preview

Ten sentences with a blank for am, is or are. She is a nurse, we are in the park, I am hungry, the cat is under the table, my socks are wet.

Why be verbs come after action verbs Nothing on this page is an action, which is confusing if it arrives too early. Once a child is solid on verbs they can see, is and are land as a second kind of verb rather than a contradiction.
14

Be Verbs Worksheet: Fill In Am, Is, or Are

Be verbs · 15 minutes · Grade 1
Be Verbs Worksheet: Fill In Am, Is, or Are worksheet preview

Ten more be-verb sentences inside a leafy border, sharing no sentence with the page above it. The dog is very hungry, my hands are cold, Anna is in the kitchen, I am not sleepy.

Hand it out two days later The subjects are shuffled into a different order and a named person appears where a pronoun was, so a child who memorized the shape of the first page still has to think on this one.
15

Verb Tenses Worksheet: Space Cut and Paste Sort

Tenses · 25 minutes · Grade 2
Verb Tenses Worksheet: Space Cut and Paste Sort worksheet preview

Three ringed planets labeled present, past and future, and fifteen word cards to cut from the bottom. Five verbs given three ways each: land, wave, float, watch and zoom.

It checks itself Every verb appears three times, so it is five cards per planet exactly. Any child who ends up with six under past knows to look again before the glue comes out. All five verbs are regular, so the -ed pattern stays visible.
16

Snowy Day Verb Tenses Worksheet: Past, Present, Future

Tenses · 25 minutes · Grade 2
Snowy Day Verb Tenses Worksheet: Past, Present, Future worksheet preview

The winter version. Three snowballs labeled past, present and future, fifteen cards built from melt, toss, pack, skate and stomp, with a snowman and mittens in the border.

The one card to watch Same structure as the space sheet, so it can follow a week later without reteaching the format. Skate is the exception on the page: the past is skated, not skateed, and it is the only place the -ed rule bends.
17

Firefly Verb Tense Sort: Write-In Verbs Worksheet

Tenses · 20 minutes · Grade 2
Firefly Verb Tense Sort: Write-In Verbs Worksheet worksheet preview

The no-scissors version. Three mason jars, a fifteen-word bank at the foot of the page, and five writing lines under each jar. The verbs are glow, buzz, crawl, climb and hop.

Why it asks for more Copying a word out means noticing that hop becomes hopped with two p's while crawl becomes crawled with none. The jars also run future, present, past rather than the usual order, so nobody fills them in from habit.
18

Barnyard Verbs: Subject Verb Agreement Worksheet

Agreement · 20 minutes · Grade 2
Barnyard Verbs: Subject Verb Agreement Worksheet worksheet preview

Fourteen farm sentences, each offering crow or crows, bark or barks. The instruction states the test outright: is the subject one, or more than one?

Print this before the next one The subjects here are almost all animals and people a child can literally count, so the one-or-more-than-one question has a visible answer. Buzzes and splashes are the two that take -es rather than -s.
19

Subject Verb Agreement Worksheet: Pick the Right Verb

Agreement · 20 minutes · Grade 2
Subject Verb Agreement Worksheet: Pick the Right Verb worksheet preview

Sixteen sentences and no farm to lean on. My aunt bakes bread on Sundays but my cousins visit us every summer, a bus stops at the corner but the girls paint in the art room.

Why it finishes the set Four items use I or we, which take the same form as a plural subject and undo any child who decided the rule is simply that one thing gets an s. Grandpa fixes old clocks is the other one to check, since fix takes -es.

One more thing.

If your kids finish a unit and you're not sure what to do next, my honest advice: don't move on yet. Spend a week mixing these in as warm-ups. Fluency isn't a unit, it's a habit, and the sheet that builds it is usually the one they ask to do again.
