The Lost Mitten Reading Comprehension Worksheet
About this worksheet
Mia loses one red mitten on the way to school, hunts for it in her bag and under her desk, and then spots a bird flying past the fence with something red in its beak. The mitten turns up tucked into a nest, and Mia decides to let the bird keep it.
Four of the five questions can be answered by pointing at a line in the story, which is what makes this a good first sheet for a child who is still learning that the answer is on the page rather than in their head. The fifth is the one that earns the sheet its place: nowhere does the story say why Mia let the bird keep the mitten, so a child has to put the warm nest and the cold hands together and decide for themselves. It is worth reading their answer out loud with them, because there is more than one right one.
