Begin here. Mia loses a red mitten, and a bird turns out to have taken it to line a nest. Five questions follow, and four of them can be answered by putting a finger on a line in the story. That is the habit this whole set is built on, so it is worth being explicit about it: the answer is on the page, not in your memory of the page.

Frogs, tadpoles, long back legs and a sticky tongue. Five sentences underneath are missing a word each, and the word bank across the top holds exactly five words, so each one is used once and nothing is left over. That one to one match takes all the guesswork out of it.

Jonah loses his new kite to a strong wind and it lands in a tall pine tree, until a girl named Ruby fetches her dad and his long pole. Four multiple choice questions follow, then two that ask for a written answer once the choices are taken away.

The first nonfiction passage, on sunflowers: how tall they grow, why the young ones turn to follow the sun, and what fills the dark middle of the flower. Four true or false statements, one written answer, and a row of animals to circle.

The moon does not make its own light, it is smaller than the sun, it circles the Earth, and people have walked on it. Four yes or no statements follow, then a written answer and four moon shapes to choose between.

The hardest of the three nonfiction sheets, and the first with no checkboxes to fall back on. A bee carries nectar from flower to hive, the nectar becomes honey, and the honey is what the bees live on in winter when there are no flowers. Four written answers and a shape to circle.

Ben and his dad make pancakes, and the passage lays the morning out in order with the signal words doing the work: first the eggs, then the flour and milk, next the batter on the pan, last the berries. Four scrambled events underneath get numbered 1 to 4.

Ana plants bean seeds with her grandpa and then waits, through many days of nothing at all, until green shoots finally appear. Three boxes ask her story back in a beginning, a middle and an end.

Theo is new at school and stands alone by the wall at recess, until the narrator remembers their own first day and walks over. Four boxes ask for characters, setting, problem and solution, and two questions follow.

A change of gear. Sam does not want his loose tooth pulled and then loses it in a bite of apple anyway. The passage runs 106 words with a running count down the right edge, so stopping the timer at sixty seconds gives you the score straight off the margin.

Milo finds a deep puddle after the rain, rolls in it until he is brown from nose to tail, and gets a bath he did not ask for. Built to the same 106 words and the same three-row chart as Sam's Loose Tooth, so the two scores compare cleanly.
