About this worksheet

Ben and his dad make pancakes on a Saturday morning, and the passage walks the whole thing through in order with the signal words doing the work: first the eggs, then the flour and milk, next the batter on the hot pan, last the berries on top.

The four events underneath are scrambled, and a child who has noticed those signal words can number them without rereading. A child who has not will need to go back through the passage line by line, which is exactly the habit the sheet is trying to build. The three questions afterward step up in difficulty: the day and the helper are both stated outright, and the last one asks how Ben felt at the end and why, which is not written anywhere and has to be reasoned out from best breakfast ever.

What students will practice

  • Number four events from the story 1 to 4 in order
  • Find details stated in the passage to answer two questions
  • Say how a character felt and give a reason why
