About this worksheet

Jonah takes a new red kite to the park on a windy Saturday, loses the string, and watches it sail over the fence into a tall pine tree. A girl named Ruby fetches her dad, who lifts it down with a long pole, and the story ends with Jonah asking Ruby to fly it with him.

The first four questions are multiple choice with three options each, and they are ordered from easiest to hardest without saying so: the color of the kite is in the opening line, where it landed takes a little more searching, how Jonah felt is stated once in the middle, and who helped requires holding Ruby and her dad apart as two different people. The last two questions drop the choices entirely and ask for a written answer, including why Jonah asked Ruby to fly the kite with him, which the story never explains. Circling a letter is far less work than writing a sentence, so this is a useful sheet for a child who understands what they read but resists the pencil.

What students will practice

  • Circle the best answer from three choices, four times
  • Find a color, a place, a feeling and a person in the text
  • Write two answers in your own words at the end
