About this worksheet

Sam has a loose tooth he does not want pulled, and then loses it anyway in a bite of apple at lunch. The passage runs to 106 words with a running count down the right edge, so you can stop the child at sixty seconds and read their score straight off the margin instead of counting back by hand.

The chart underneath holds three reads rather than one, which is the whole point of a passage like this. The first read tells you where a child is, and the second and third are where the gain shows up, usually a jump of ten or fifteen words once the tricky bits stop being a surprise. Two comprehension questions sit between the passage and the chart so that speed does not quietly become the only thing being measured, and both ask about how Sam felt rather than what happened, which is harder to answer by skimming.

What students will practice

  • Read a 106-word passage aloud and time one minute
  • Record words per minute across three separate reads
  • Answer two questions about why Sam felt the way he did
