About this worksheet

Theo is new at school and stands by the wall alone at recess. The narrator wants to ask him to play but feels shy too, then remembers their own first day and walks over. It is a small story with a real problem in it, which is what makes it work for this task.

The four boxes ask for characters, setting, problem and solution. Characters and setting are quick, and the problem box is where the thinking happens: a child who writes Theo was alone has understood it, and a child who writes Theo was new has only copied the first line. The two questions below push a step further, and the second one asks how Theo felt at the end, which the story never says. A child has to get there from he sits at my table at lunch.
