Ten numbered bakery sentences under a rolling pin, with a scatter of flour across the bottom of the page. The baker stirs the thick batter, my sister cracks two brown eggs, the warm ovens hum all morning, the soft dough rises in the bowl, she frosts the tall birthday cake, the bread bakes in the hot oven, and four more.
Two of these are quietly harder than they look. Ovens that hum and dough that rises are actions without a person doing them, and second graders who have learned that a verb is something you do often skip straight past both. That is the point of including them here rather than filling all ten lines with stirring and pouring.
